For the majority of people that suffer from mental health illnesses, be it depression, anxiety, bi-polar, etc, it is due to some sort of trauma. It could be trauma as a child or trauma as an adult. It can also lead to people not having their own identity and a lack of self worth.

I will tell you this, there isn’t a magic pill, a special liquor or any drug that will fix it for you. There is no shortcut to healing! It is hard and constant work and a commitment, but it’s the only way to do it BUT it’s worth it. I’ve been on both sides of that coin and I can tell you without a doubt, I’m a much better person now!

Medications can and are necessary for some people but those assist in managing symptoms, not dealing with symptoms. If your symptoms are likely a result of some sort of trauma, for me it was childhood sexual abuse by a non-family member, you have to deal with the trauma. It would be nice if we could just say, “oh that happened but I’ll just move on”, but it doesn’t work that way.

It will be a factor, most likely sub-consciously in all your decision making. One of the reasons I started my blog is because I’m hoping others can learn from my experience. The worst thing about trauma when you don’t deal with it head-on and you compartmentalize it or mask it in some way, is that it very often will lead to other traumas because we get ourselves into unhealthy situations because again, un-dealt with trauma will always be a factor!

There are so many resources available nowadays to get help. There are all different types of PTSD meetings, different types of therapy from talk therapy to movement therapy and many other options. You just have to reach out.
